How to Set Up a Doorbell Camera

10 Steps to Set Up Your Video Doorbell Camera

Before you start, make sure you have:
  • • The video doorbell camera
  • • A compatible smartphone with the manufacturer's app installed
  • • A power drill (if mounting on a wall)
  • • Screws and anchors (usually included with the doorbell)
  • • A screwdriver
  • • A level (optional, for accurate installation)
  • • Your Wi-Fi network name and password

If you’re replacing a wired doorbell:
  • • Locate your home's circuit breaker and turn off the power to the existing doorbell. This is crucial to prevent electrical shocks.
  • • Remove the old doorbell from the wall and disconnect the wires.

  • • Position the mounting bracket where you want to install the doorbell, ideally 4-5 feet above the ground for the best viewing angle.
  • • Use a level to ensure the bracket is straight.
  • • Mark the screw holes with a pencil. If needed, drill pilot holes.
  • • Secure the mounting bracket to the wall using the provided screws. For brick, concrete, or stucco surfaces, use the appropriate wall anchors.

  • • For wired doorbell cameras, connect the wires to the terminals on the back of the doorbell. Typically, the wires can be attached to either terminal.
  • • Tighten the screws on the terminals to secure the wires.
  • • If you're not replacing an existing doorbell and need to connect to an indoor chime, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wiring the doorbell to the chime box.

  • • After connecting the wiring, mount the doorbell camera onto the bracket.
  • • This typically involves sliding the doorbell onto the bracket until it clicks into place or securing it with additional screws.

If you turned off the power, go back to the circuit breaker and switch it back on. The doorbell camera should power up, and you may notice a light indicating it’s ready for setup.

Launch the manufacturer’s app on your smartphone and follow the on-screen prompts to add a new device. You’ll typically be asked to scan a QR code on the doorbell or input a setup code. Next, connect the doorbell to your Wi-Fi by entering your network credentials in the app. Once connected, the app will guide you through the final steps, such as naming the doorbell, configuring motion detection zones, and customizing notification settings.

Press the doorbell button to confirm it rings on your phone and any connected indoor chimes. Check the video quality, night vision, and two-way audio by accessing the live feed in the app. Adjust the app settings to match your preferences, such as motion detection sensitivity and the type of alerts you want to receive.

If your doorbell model comes with a security screw, use the provided tool to fasten the doorbell to the bracket, helping to prevent theft. You may also want to activate any anti-theft features available in the app, such as alarms or notifications triggered by tampering.

Adjust the camera angle if needed to ensure it covers the desired area. Review the installation guide to confirm all steps were completed, and check the troubleshooting section if any issues arise.
